Browns Pull Aggies QB Kellen Mond Off Waiver Wire Following Trade

Kellen Mond won't be heading to free agency after all following another trade by the Browns.

Former Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond was told to pack up and head home Thursday by the Cleveland Browns. He was being waived prior to the Browns' final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

That was before another Browns' quarterback was shipped out to the desert in exchange for a future draft pick.

Cleveland pulled Mond from the waiver wire before transactions closed for the day after trading away former Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a 2024 fifth-round pick.

This doesn't mean Mond will make the final 53-man roster, but he at least will stick around for another weekend before roster cuts become finalized.

Mond, 24, was competing with both Dobbs and former UCLA star Dorian Thompson-Robinson for the backup quarterback job behind Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson. In three preseason games, the former Aggie went 32-of-55 for 297 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.

Mond started for the Browns in the Hall of Fame Game against the New York Jets in Canton, Ohio, to kick off the preseason earlier this month. Since then, his time has been reduced as Cleveland wanted to expand the rep counts of both Thompson-Robinson and Dobbs.

A 2021 third-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings, Mond joined Cleveland after being waived at the end of training camp last season. He played in one game as a Viking but did not see any regular-season action with the Browns.

A four-year starter for the Aggies, Mond split reps with Nick Starkel in 2017 before being named the full-time starter under Jimbo Fisher in 2018. In 46 games, the San Antonio native threw for 9,661 yards and 71 touchdowns against 27 interceptions while rushing for 1,608 yards and 22 scores.

In 2020, Mond quarterbacked A&M to the first nine-win season in the Fisher era, capped off with an Orange Bowl victory over North Carolina. He finished his time in College Station as the Aggies' all-time passing leader in yards and touchdowns.

The No. 23 Aggies open the season at Kyle Field on Sept. 2 against New Mexico.
