Texas A&M vs. Texas Rematch in Jeopardy? SEC Schedule Plan Not Finalized

The SEC schedule for both the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns has yet be finalized. However, football is the only sport where this is the case, per Texas A&M Aggies athletic director Ross Bjork.

There's now nothing stopping the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners from making their SEC football debut in the fall of 2024, as the move became official on Feb. 9.

However, certain expectations that have highlighted Texas' anticipated move to the SEC are yet to be finalized, including the rivalry rematch with the Texas A&M Aggies.

While the SEC scheduling plan for both OU and Texas has yet to be finalized, football is the only sport where this is the case, per Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork.

This means that there are no guarantees that the Longhorns and Aggies will meet in what would be one of the most highly-anticipated games for the two programs in recent memory.

But to get there, the SEC would need to adopt a nine-game schedule that features three permanent opponents, otherwise known as a 3-6 model. This would allow Texas and Texas A&M to play each other every year, bringing balance to the universe.

However, an eight-game schedule would feature only one permanent rival for each team, making it "complicated" for the Longhorns and Aggies. Bjork says that in this potential 1-7 model, Texas' permanent opponent would be OU while A&M's would be LSU.

“It is complicated,” Bjork said. “The first thing is, let’s get to a nine-game decision. We support nine games. We want that to happen. Hopefully, we can get there. Let’s sort out the College Football Playoff calendar – do you go to Week Zero? And then we can start seeing models on when we would play Texas.”

Bjork says that a decision is looking to be finalized by May. But with the SEC knowing the financial gain that could come out of a revamped annual matchup between Texas and Texas A&M, it's hard to imagine a scenario where a 3-6 model doesn't come into play.
