3 Aggies Participating In NFL Scouting Combine
INDIANAPOLIS -- Three former Texas A&M Aggies players will look to mark their presence felt over the next week at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Ind., but when will they meet with the media and take the field?
Defensive backs Jaylon Jones and Antonio Johnson will speak with reporters from across the country on Thursday morning. The duo will then work on-field drills Friday afternoon before leaving Saturday.
Running back Devon Achane is slated to speak Friday morning, along with all quarterbacks, running backs, and receivers. The speedster will work out Saturday morning as part of the quarterback/receiver/running back/tight end drills.
Johnson and Achane are viewed as early-to-mid-round selections entering the combine. Johnson, a two-year starter at the nickel defender role, has consistently been mocked at the end of the first round or at the beginning of the second. Achane, who posted his first 1,000-yard season in Aggieland, is considered a late-second to early-third-round pick.
Jones might have the most to gain from working out in Indianapolis as he currently is viewed as an early Day 3 selection. The San Antonio native finished with 27 tackles and six pass deflections in his final season with the Aggies.
Johnson is currently viewed as one of, if not the top safety in the class. Versatile enough to play in a Buffalo nickel role or strong safety at the next level, the 6-3, 225-pounder registered 71 total tackles last season under first-year defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin.
Achane could solidify his stock as the No. 3 running back prospect behind Texas' Bijan Robinson and Alabama's Jahmyr Gibbs. Best known for Olympic-style track speed, Achane averaged 6.4 yards per attempt during his three seasons in College Station and led the SEC in yards per carry (7.1) during the 2021 campaign.
Last season, five A&M players were invited to Indianapolis for the combine. Former All-American offensive lineman Kenyon Green became the first Aggie since Germain Ifedi in 2016 to be taken in the first round when the Houston Texans selected him 15th overall.
The NFL Draft will occur in Kansas City, Mo., on April 27-29.
