In this story:

Before he was leading the Tennessee Volunteers to historic offensive heights and recruiting success, head coach Josh Heupel starred at quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. He started the 1999 and 2000 seasons, finishing second in Heisman Trophy voting in 2000. Yes, you read that right. SECOND.

The College Football Hall of Fame announced the 2024 ballot on Monday, and Heupel will be on it. He features alongside NFL legends Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Vick, Marshawn Lloyd, and Terrell Suggs, one of the most loaded groups the hall has seen in a long time. Heupel was drafted into the NFL in the sixth round by the Miami Dolphins. Though his professional career didn't amount to much, he was one of Oklahoma's most decorated passers before their recent string of professional quarterbacks. He amassed over 7,000 passing yards and 50 passing touchdowns in a different era of football; the run game was king, but Heupel was ahead of the curve from the beginning.

Heupel's laundry list of awards includes a national championship, an AP College Football Player of the Year, Big-12 Player of the Year, and a Walter Camp Player of the Year. There's a reason Tennessee consistently recruits the quarterback position at a high level - Heupel has done the things he teaches at a high level. We will see if he ends up being inducted, but even making the ballot is a huge selling point.
