Kevin Sumlin Hired As Maryland Assistant

Maryland has hired former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin as their offensive coordinator.

A former SEC head coach has landed an assistant job. According to Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports.com, the Maryland Terrapins have agreed to terms on a contract with former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin, making him their offensive coordinator.

Sumlin spent six years with the Aggies, amassing a 51-26 record. While he started hot, Texas A&M never improved under Sumlin; they went 11-2 and finished No. 5 in the AP Poll during his fist season with the program, and finished his tenure going 8-5 in three consecutive seasons.

Maryland head coach Mike Locksley has spent five seasons with the program, transforming them from a one-win team his first year to an 8-5 squad in 2022. The Terrapins have made some positive momentum on the recruiting trail, though they are still waiting for a break through to propel them toward the top of the Big Ten.

Sumlin will work with Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa this season. Tagovailoa threw for over 3,000 yards and 18 touchdowns in his second season as a full-time starter. He is the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Too Tagovailoa who formerly starred for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
