Nico Iamaleava Offers Thoughts On Progression In Fast-Paced Tennessee Offense

In this story:
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel brought his storied, fast-paced offense to Knoxville, Tennessee. While it's brought great success for the Vols, it's a difficult adjustment for high school quarterbacks coming in and attempting to learn the system. It's an adjustment, but quarterback Nico Iamaleava feels that he's progressed and is ready for the challenge of running their offense for four quarters.
He'll have to do that against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Monday afternoon in the Citrus Bowl. Starting quarterback Joe Milton III opted out of the game to shift his focus toward the upcoming NFL Draft, leaving Iamaleava as the starter for Tennessee's final game of the 2023 season. He spoke about his confidence in the system and himself ahead of a big opportunity.
"A lot, man. I think it was just me learning the playbook first. And I knew everything was going to slow down as soon as I got the offense down, so I think going into spring, the game will be different than last spring for sure."
The Vols are using the Citrus Bowl as a jumping-off point heading into next season. The offense will look different than fans are accustomed to, and Iamaleava and company are considering the game as their first big moment of the 2024 season.
"Yeah, definitely. Coach Heup always says this is the beginning of our 2024 season, so just going into this game, I think everybody’s looking at it really as the first game of our year. So yeah, this has been huge, man. And we’re looking forward to 2024."
