In this story:

On Sept. 2, the Tennessee Volunteers will take on the Virginia Cavaliers in Nashville to open up the season. It is the fifth time in history that the two schools have met against one another. The Volunteers lead the series with a record of 3-1 against the Wahoo.

The one loss for Tennessee against Virginia came in 1980 in Knoxville. The last time the teams played was in 1990 in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl. The Cavaliers were a 3-7 team last season. The last two games were canceled due to a tragic shooting that resulted in the deaths of three of their players (Lavel Davis Jr., D'Sean Perry, and Devin Chandler). The two games that were canceled were against Coastal Carolina and then on the road against in-state rival Virginia Tech. It was the first time the Hokies and Cavs hadn't faced each other since 1969.

It was also the lowest win total they had since 2016. In ACC play, the Cavs had a record of 1-6. Their only win in conference play was against Georgia Tech in Atlanta by a final score of 16-9. In the seven games they played against ACC, they got more than 20 points once against North Carolina. They also allowed 30+ points in four of those seven games they had in conference play. The Wahoo also played just one ranked opponent all season: North Carolina. The Tar Heels were ranked 17th at the time, and Virginia gave them a run for their money, losing in a close 31-28 game. The Cavs are 73-63-4 in their past neutral site games in program history. They are also 7-3 in their past ten season openers and have been known to get off to great starts in the early parts of the season. Kickoff between Virginia and Tennessee will be at noon C.T.
