Now that spring practice is well behind us, the dust has settled in a way on the early part of the 2023 off-season for programs nationwide. Teams have been figuring out where guys fit in and who the key contributors will come to fall.

On3, a popular college football site, recently released their rankings for the Southeastern Conference following the end of spring ball. Near the top, they had the Tennessee Volunteers. Coming in at number four, the Vols have to like where they're at, although they are gunning for that number one spot. Coming ahead of the Vols are the two-time reigning national champs, the Georgia Bulldogs, and their 2022 SEC Championship foe, LSU, followed by the Alabama Crimson Tide. In a division that features the Bulldogs, most outlets across the country see the Vols as the next in line in the east if Georgia uncharacteristically struggles.

Jesse Simonton, the On3 writer who published the rankings, explained what he expects to see from the team in 2023. Of course, it starts with Milton, who Simonton describes as the next man up, with Nico Iameleava waiting in the wings. Simonton also alludes to the fact that despite losing guys like Cedric Tillman and Jalin Hyatt, the offense should still be electric with guys like Squirrel White and Bru McCoy operating Josh Heupel's system. Of course, the burning question for Tennessee is what kind of step the defense will take, which Simonton also points to. All in all, the Vols have to be pretty happy with where they are ranked right now, especially with how many unknowns they have after losing so much talent to the draft. One thing is certain; If Josh Heupel has shown Tennessee fans anything, this team is built to improve yearly. If that is the case, there's a lot to be excited about in Knoxville.
