Potential Options to Fill Tennessee's Last On-Field Role

The most recent addition to Tennessee’s coaching staff is Brian Luc Jean-Mary leaving one more on-field spot available. Several names continue to float around as we take a look at potential options that could fill the final spot.

Joe Lorig

Lorig following Tim Banks to Tennessee from Penn State makes sense in some ways. He could carry the same title of special teams coordinator/outside linebackers coach, while also getting a pay increase. He has coached all across the country, including at Memphis for a multi-year stent. This could be his opportunity to make a move to the SEC.

Ricky Brumfield

Brumfield is a guy with a lot of coaching versatility, and he is widely respected in the coaching world. His name has been linked to the final Tennessee job more than most of late. He is currently on Bronco Mendenhall’s staff at Virginia and would bring valuable special teams coordinator experience to Knoxville with him. He has strong ties to important recruiting battle grounds, and he could be an ideal pairing with Tim Banks and Brian Jean-Mary.

John Jancek

Jancek is an obvious name to mention. He has been talked about in various different roles at Tennessee. He has family in Knoxville snd has a desire to get back. His name has not been mentioned as much of late, but he still remains a coach to monitor.

Nick Toth

Tennessee could opt to add another former UCF staffer to its final on-field position. Toth was at UCF with Josh Heupel and could be an ideal fit. Toth, a high energy coach was the special teams coordinator in Orlando but he has coached linebackers before at Texas A&M. He was a big factor in Von Miller’s development, but he also has a lot of flexibility as a position coach.

Sources have indicated to VR2 on SI that Tennessee would like to have a hire in place before the weekend, so we will continue to monitor this closely as it moves forward.
