No.2 Texas Tech Softball hosts BYU in weekend series showdown

LUBBOCK, Texas — For the first time in series history, the No.2 Texas Tech Red Raiders (35-2) will host the visiting BYU Cougars (11-2) in a three-game series to continue conference play tonight at 6 p.m. at Tracy Sellers Field. Tech continues to be dominant in the diamond while BYU has continued to play tough despite recent results.
Starting with Tech, the Red Raiders have continued to dominate thus far. In the middle of a 10-game win streak, Texas Tech has won all four conference series just past the mid-way point of the Big 12 schedule. Tech picked up another dominant mid-week win on the road.
Texas Tech defeated ACU 9-1 on Tuesday night in Abilene. The Tech offense continued to be dynamic, scoring 7 runs in the third inning to run up the score. Big 12 Player of the Week senior Jackie Lis had another stellar performance from the plate, building off her .818 performance last week. Lis went 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs and a run as four other Red Raiders recorded hits in the win.
While in the circle, junior pitcher Kaitlyn Terry only allowed three hits and one run, as Terry struck out eight batters, leading to a 14-0 win from the circle. She also had a nice day at the plate, going 3 for 2, with 2 runs. Terry continues to be a key piece in the Red Raiders two-hole leading the team with a .538 batting average which is fourth best in the country. Terry now pushes her hit total to 24 straight games as the Red Raiders wrapped up the victory.
While for BYU, a tumultuous week follows as the Cougars come to Lubbock. BYU grinded out an 8-5 win over Utah Valley State before losing its series to Kansas over the weekend. There were bright spots for the Cougars as they picked up a win in dramatic fashion in game two of the series against the Jayhawks. Sophomore infielder Danica Acosta launched a walk-off home run to secure a victory for BYU in the series. Acosta and senior shortstop Hailey Morrow paced the Cougars offense, going .500 and .467 respectively vs Kansas. While pitching, sophomore pitcher Hailey Shuler posted a 5.12 ERA in the Cougars' pair of wins coming into this series.
The standout aspect for BYU has been defense. The Cougars turned four double-plays, three alone against Kansas in game two. BYU currently ranks 6th in the Big 12 in double plays with 14 and 5th in double-plays per game. The Cougars were scrappy is last seasons series besting Tech twice in Provo, but BYU have not faced an offensive juggernaut like Tech this season.
The Red Raiders continue to lead the Big 12 with .404 batting average, while leading in runs, and hits. In contrast, the Cougars have struggled from the plate. In combination with reigning National Pitcher of the Year senior NiJaree Canady resting for a majority of the game vs ACU only pitching 1 inning recording the final three outs of the game. Tech will look to overpower BYU with its top-tier play in pitching and hitting from the plate.
First pitch is set for 6 P.M. CST in game one from Tracy Sellers Field on ESPN +. With the final two games on FSI through Saturday.
