Analyst Believes CFB Is About To Witness The 'Golden Era' of Texas Football

The Texas Longhorns football program is peaking at the right time with a move to the SEC looming.

The Texas Longhorns are not long removed from questioning if they'd ever be able to return to national prominence but they silenced those doubts this past season.

They not only won the Big 12, but they got over the hump and were among the top teams in college football, making their College Football Playoff debut.

Their success and obvious signs they are heading in the right direction ahead of their move to the SEC have many giddy about what's next.

Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian holds up the Big 12 Football Championship trophy following the Oklahoma State University Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023.

ESPN analyst Matt Barrie even went as far as to say that Texas is heading towards another "golden era" of Longhorns football.

On a recent episode of Always College Football, McElroy was feeling quite bullish when it came to Texas. So much so, that he expressed that they are the biggest winners in the SEC.

“It’d be hard for me to look at the SEC right now and not think that the biggest winner in January are the Texas Longhorns," said McElroy.

Something Barrie agreed with and took a step further by saying this could be the era of Texas.

"I think Texas is headed to a spot where they just had to believe. Recruits, college football, and the public had to believe that Sark could get it done at Texas. The proof is there. I think you are going into another golden era of Texas football, revealed Barrie.

This would absolutely have to mean at least one title, if not more, and the Longhorns would presumably resemble a program like Alabama or Georgia. Something that Barrie revealed is a possibility thanks to the Longhorns' ability to load up on talent.

“(Sarkisian has) proved it in the portal. They’re loaded again. Quinn Ewers coming back is the smartest thing he could have done, to play one more year of college football. If I was ranking SEC teams going into next year, Georgia sets the standard as they always do, but you need to legitimately talk about Texas 2, 3 and 4, and do it convincingly," said Barrie.

The Longhorns will have some tough matchups in 2024, including one against Georgia but this is now a program that is expected to win against anyone. Texas should very well be in the mix for a title, otherwise, we may not be seeing the "golden era" anytime soon.
