Texas Football: Texas Defensive Back Issues Apology for Targeting Hit

Texas cornerback Jalen Green issued an official apology for a targeting hit on Kansas State wide receiver Wykeen Gill this past weekend.
Green made helmet-to-helmet contact with Gill in the fourth quarter of the Longhorns' 27-24 win over the Wildcats.
“First and foremost I want to apologize to Wykeen Gill and Kansas State for the hit and targeting penalty that I received during Saturday’s game," Green said. "I did not try to hurt him, and I would never do that. It’s not how we’re coached or how I play."
The incident occurred away from the play as Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson was handing the ball off to running back Jordan Brown.
"I have great respect for the game of football and my intent was to break up a screen play that had gotten us several times during the game," Green said. "I realize how it may have looked, and I understand the penalty that was called. I wish it didn’t happen, and I do want everyone to know I was not trying to take a cheap shot.”
Green was ejected for the play and will serve a one-half suspension to start this week's game per NCAA rules.
Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando also weighed in on the incident.
"(We) try to educate guys as much as possible," Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando said. "And, you know, fortunately, there's no injuries with it. (Green) doesn't feel good about I can tell you that. We know, obviously, from our standpoint is we want to play clean football."
D'Shawn Jamison will likely draw the start in Green's stead. The Longhorns and Cyclones kick off on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
