AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 7 Texas Longhorns escaped with a 33-30 overtime win over the No. 23 Kansas State Wildcats in Austin on Saturday to move to 8-1. Maalik Murphy got the start once again for the injured Quinn Ewers, who has now missed two games due to the injury he suffered to his throwing shoulder in the 31-24 win over the Houston Cougars on Oct. 21.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian had a brief update on Ewers' status during his postgame press conference.

"Quinn's update, he's moving in the right direction. How quickly, I don't exactly know yet," Sarkisian said. "... One of the strengths of this team is our depth, and quarterback is no different. Hopefully we can get Quinn back."

Prior to kickoff on Saturday, FOX college football insider Bruce Feldman reported that there's optimism for Ewers to return next week on the road against the TCU Horned Frogs.

"He did throw on Thursday," Feldman said. "We're told they are optimistic he could return as early as next week at TCU."

Murphy is now 2-0 as a starter, but was far from perfect in Saturday's win. He went 19 of 37 passing for 248 yards and one touchdown but had two interceptions, both of which were questionable throws that could've been avoided. He has four turnovers in his last two games.

With Murphy's up-and-down day, the attention is understandably shifting to when Ewers could return. Murphy should be given tons of credit for making some key throws down the stretch despite his mistakes, but having Ewers back into the fold is an upgrade for the Texas offense.

"I know this much, our team is fighting through a lot of stuff from an injury standpoint," Sarkisian said. " ... In the meantime, we're gonna try to pour in to things that Maalik continues to do well, and then try to work on some of the issues there and take care of the ball."

Kickoff time for Saturday's Texas vs. TCU tilt is still TBD.
