'Soaked It In!' DeMarvion Overshown Cowboys Birthday Gift in Debut

Dallas Cowboys and former Texas Longhorns linebacker DeMarvion Overshown's emotions of playing for his favorite team didn't get the best of him in their preseason opener Saturday.

Sunday is linebacker former Texas Longhorns DeMarvion Overshown's birthday, but his biggest present was given to him Saturday.

Overshown, now 23, said it was his childhood dream to be a Dallas Cowboy after they selected him in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he got to live out his dream and put the star on his helmet. Overshown doubled down on the joy he feels being a Cowboy and said he took a moment before Dallas' preseason opener to absorb the moment.

"Putting [the jersey] on, putting my arm bands on and my sleeve and realizing that I'm going to do this for the Dallas Cowboys, a lot of people dream about that," Overshown said. "A lot of people say, 'Man, I want to do that,' and I'm part of that 1 percent that got the chance to do that. I definitely, before the game, took five deep breaths and just soaked it in."

The Arp, Texas, native is on the outside looking in for cracking the starting lineup, but proved Saturday that he can be a rotational depth piece for defensive coordinator Dan Quinn behind the starters, like the guy who has taken him under his wing, Micah Parsons.

“He’s gravitated to me," Parsons said. "You see a flash. You see him shoot a gap. I’m like, ‘Bro, just let it go all the time. Stop thinking, just play your game.’ That’s how you show that you have a frickin playmaker. I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Against the Jaguars, Overshown's six tackles were the third most on the Cowboys. He and safety Markquese Bell combined for a third-and-1 stop of Jaguars running back Tank Bigsby for no gain.

Overshown — whose big college personality led to him giving the pregame hype talk — said he's a player that will give fast-paced effort on a week-to-week basis.

"Flying around on the field, pursuing, trying to beat everybody to the ball," Overshown said. "I take pride in that, being around the ball when it's all said and done. So, I'm looking forward to being that guy all year."
