AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns shook up the 2024 college basketball recruiting class on Wednesday.

Texas has landed a commitment and official signature from five-star Link Academy (Branson, MO) guard and Dallas native Tre Johnson.

Johnson, who is the No. 5 overall player in 247Sports' 2024 rankings, picked Texas over in-state rival Baylor, as the two programs were his final two choices

Johnson's signing comes shortly after the Longhorns signed Cam Scott and Nic Codie to their NLOI.

The Longhorns announced the signing shortly after the news broke.

“[Rodney Terry] and I have had a good relationship always. He was my dad’s assistant coach when he was at Baylor," Johnson previously told On3 of Texas. "We’ve always had a good relationship and him getting the head coaching job is really good for him. He also lets his guards play and also uses the bigger guards in the post. The players (stood out on the visit). They all stay in the gym and it’s open 24/7.”

Texas Makes Final Cut for 2024 Five-Star G Tre Johnson

Johnson has held an offer from Texas since Dec. 7, 2021 — the second-longest tenure to Baylor which offered him Aug. 1, 2021. He took an official visit to Austin on Sept. 17, 2022.

Baylor had been as the likely favorite to land Johnson, but he's had a long-standing relationship with Terry, which likely played a difference in the decision. The Longhorns signing Johnson right away during the early signing period is a good sign of Johnson's belief in the program.

No. 19 Texas hosts Rice on Wednesday night.
