Texas Longhorns Make Final Cut for 2024 Five-Star G Tre Johnson

In this story:
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Longhorns men's basketball is now one step closer to landing a commitment from arguably the best player in the 2024 class.
Per an announcement Tuesday on social media, 2024 Link Academy (Branson, MO) guard Tre Johnson has cut his decision list down to the Longhorns and Baylor Bears. Johnson, a five-star talent per 247Sports' rankings, was originally considering a group that included Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas, and Kansas, but the Dallas native is now looking to play college ball in his home state.
“[Rodney Terry] and I have had a good relationship always. He was my dad’s assistant coach when he was at Baylor," Johnson previously told On3 of Texas. "We’ve always had a good relationship and him getting the head coaching job is really good for him. He also lets his guards play and also uses the bigger guards in the post. The players (stood out on the visit). They all stay in the gym and it’s open 24/7.”
Johnson has held an offer from Texas since Dec. 7, 2021 — the second-longest tenure to Baylor which offered him Aug. 1, 2021. He took an official visit to Austin on Sept. 17, 2022.
The Longhorns already have one commitment in the 2024 class from Lexington (SC) forward Cam Scott, who announced his commitment on Aug. 11.
Texas and Terry will have to continue being diligent in the pursuit of Johnson. Per 247Sports' unofficial Crystal Ball predictions, Baylor is currently predicted to have the edge.
The Longhorns open up their season at home on Monday, Nov. 6 against Incarnate Word.
