Ole Miss 'On The Verge' of Hiring Former Longhorns Coach Chris Beard

The Ole Miss Rebels are reportedly 'on the verge' of hiring a new leader of their men's basketball program - former Texas Longhorns coach, Chris Beard

AUSTIN - It appears that former Texas head men's basketball Chris Beard will be heading to the SEC after all, just not with the Longhorns.

According to reports from On3 on Thursday, the Ole Miss Rebels are 'on the verge' of hiring Beard as their next basketball coach, just two months after his firing from the Longhorns.

The Rebels have been in search of a new head coach since they fired then-coach Kermit Davis in February.

Beard has an outstanding overall record in his head coaching career (237-98), but he was fired from Texas after being charged with the felony assault of his fiance in December of last year.

The charges, however, were later dropped by the Travis County district attorney, paving the way for Beard to find a new job.

As far as coaching stops are concerned, Beard has plenty before his arrival in Oxford. His first collegiate head coaching job came with Fort Scott Community College in Kansas beginning in 1999. He also had a stop in the JUCO ranks with Seminole State Junior College in Oklahoma.

From 2001-11, Beard served as the associate head coach for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and he was later head coach in Lubbock from 2016-21. He then transitioned to Austin where he was the coach of the Longhorns until earlier this year.

In the NCAA Tournament, Beard has posted a 10-4 record as a coach, and he led Texas Tech to a Final Four appearance in 2019.

The Red Raiders would go on to lose in the national championship game to the Virginia Cavaliers.

Since Beard's departure, interim head coach Rodney Terry has led the Longhorns on an impressive run, nearly guiding them to a share of the Big 12 regular season championship.
