Iconic Longhorns Figure Red McCombs Passes Away at 95

Red McCombs, an iconic Benefactor of the University of Texas, has passed away.

A University of Texas icon, Bill Joe 'Red' McCombs passed away at the age of 95 on Monday morning. 

The McCombs family released a statement shortly after his passing. 

"The entire McCombs Family is heartbroken to announce that our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Red McCombs, passed away on Sunday February 19, 2023. As he drew his last breath peacefully at home, he was surrounded by family that loved and adored him."

"Red was a visionary entrepreneur who touched many lives and impacted our community in immeasurable ways. But to us he was always, first and foremost, “Dad” or “Poppop."

McCombs was a major supporter in both the athletic and academic spheres for the Longhorns, donating $50 million to the school in May of 2000. 

As a result of his donation, the University renamed its business school as the McCombs School of Business.

The University also named the new north end zone expansion of the football stadium as the Red McCombs Red Zone, which offers Texas fans a 'unique, state-of-the-art area to enjoy one of the best atmospheres in college football.'

Former Texas coach Mack Brown, who was close with McCombs, released a statement on Twitter offering his condolences.

"Saddened to hear that Red McCombs has passed away," Brown Tweeted. "He was a giant of a man and a dear friend. My life is so much better for having known him and he will definitely be missed. Sending our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends."

McCombs, who was also a former owner of the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs, was also a major philanthropist, donating hundreds of millions of dollars throughout his life to various charities and philanthropic organizations over his lifetime. 

McCombs is survived by his children, Marsha Shields, Connie McNab, and Lynda McCombs, as well as his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
