The Thanksgiving holiday festivities will offer no rest for the 2022-23 Connecticut Huskies basketball program and its supporters.

UConn’s men’s and women’s programs will make their way to Portland, OR to partake in separate tournaments honoring PDX native and Nike Inc. founder Phil Knight. The men will partake in the eight-team Phil Knight Invitational (scheduled for Nov. 24-27), which returns after a three-year hiatus while the women will appear in the four-school Phil Knight Legacy College Basketball Tournament (Nov. 25-27). Three Portland arenas will host the proceedings, including Moda Center (home of the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers), Chiles Center (home of PKI men’s participant Portland), and the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The PKI was originally held in 2017, then also known as the PK-80 Invitational in celebration of Knight’s 80th birthday. UConn’s men, then part of the American Athletic Conference, appeared in that original festivities, coming in fourth place through an effort that included a win over Knight’s alma mater of Oregon. Behind an effort from tournament MVP Cassius Winston, Michigan State topped North Carolina in the final. Both finalists will return for the 2022 edition. The PKI returned in 2019 in a four-team, non-tournament format. Oregon, set to make a third appearance this fall, topped Memphis while Oklahoma bested Oregon State.

Fellow Big East representative Villanova will be among the Husky men’s Pacific Northwest competition, which also includes Alabama and Iowa State. A four-team women’s bracket will also be included, featuring Iowa State, Michigan State, North Carolina, and Oregon. Every game will be broadcast on the networks of ESPN, as the tournaments are properties of its Events division.

“We are honored to bring together some of the best men’s and women’s college basketball teams in tribute to Phil Knight and his lasting impact on the sport,” Clint Overby, vice president of ESPN Events, said in a statement. “The quality of both fields along with the multi-venue setup will make Portland the epicenter of college hoops this Thanksgiving weekend.”

The women’s group will appear in the Phil Knight Legacy hosted by Portland-based, Rip City Management, whose clients include the Rose Quarter district that houses the Moda Center and Memorial Coliseum. UConn will be joined by Duke, Iowa, and Oregon State in a four-team bracket.

A potential matchup with the Iowa Hawkeyes would likely become one of the most anticipated showdowns of the holiday proceedings. If everything were to pan out medically, it would be a staging of accomplished underclassmen still several years away from their professional debuts, including Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, and Caitlin Clark. The two sides previously squared off in

the regional semifinal round of last season’s NCAA Tournament in San Antonio, with the Huskies prevailing in a 92-72 final.

An eight-team men’s bracket will also feature local representation in Portland State and Oregon State, who will be accompanied by Duke, Florida, Gonzaga, Purdue, West Virginia, and Xavier.

The Connecticut men’s and women’s basketball teams respectively return to action on Wednesday and Friday night. Seton Hall will visit Storrs (8:30 p.m. ET, CBSSN) while the women hit the road for a Friday night tilt against Xavier (7 p.m. ET, SNY).
