The North Carolina Tar Heels are searching for a new head coach ahead of next season, and Arizona's Tommy Lloyd has been heavily linked with a move to Chapel Hill.

Over the last week, the 51-year-old head coach has made a couple of jarring comments pertaining to the rumors of him taking over at North Carolina following the conclusion of this season. Earlier this week, Lloyd defended those comments and did his best to suppress the noise around this rumor.

  • "It's absolutely true, there is going to be another coach; this is a great program," Lloyd said. "I didn't say when. People are going to speculate all they want. Guys, this team has my full focus. Nothing, nothing, I promise you nothing, is knocking me off that path. You might call them 'distractions,' but it's because you're distracted. That doesn't mean I'm distracted, or we're distracted."

On Thursday, at his first Final Four press conference, Lloyd was once again asked about his connection with the Tar Heels coaching vacancy. He explained what his main focus is on at the moment.

Lloyd's Thoughts

  • "I've got my full focus on this team," Lloyd said. "Nothing is distracting me. That's just how I've decided to approach it. I'm 100% locked in on Arizona basketball right now. I'm excited what this team can do. I have a real strong belief in this team, and this team deserves my full attention, so that's what I'm giving them."

What This Means

Once again, the veteran head coach did not rule out joining Carolina after the season. Instead, he stated how he is focused on 'this team right now.' That won't cut it if Lloyd wants to convey that he isn’t interested in the North Carolina head coach position. His phrasing and answers to these questions only raise more speculation.

Emphasizing "right now" is completely justifiable, as Arizona is preparing for a marquee Final Four matchup against the Michigan Wolverines, with a trip to the National Championship game on the line. However, as former North Carolina forward Justin Jackson said on Wednesday during a podcast appearance, Lloyd has yet to say anything that indicates he is not interested in what the Tar Heels have to offer.

Until Lloyd says anything along those lines, his initial comments on the matter hold too much weight to simply ignore. At this moment, Lloyd should be considered the overwhelming favorite to be hired as North Carolina's next head coach this offseason.
