USC Football: Expert Believes Caleb Williams' Chances Of A Heisman Repeat Are Done

Maybe he's human after all.

USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams' repeat Heisman campaign came crashing down after the team's blowout loss at South Bend last weekend.

College football's best player last season failed to impress after Notre Dame picked him off three times in a disastrous performance.

Trojans Wire writer Matt Zemek states that Williams' chances to join Archie Griffin as the sport's only two multi-Heisman recipients died in Week 7, with several doubts for his future also abounding.

Heisman campaigns, for repeat winners or first-time winners, can’t have too many ordinary games. Caleb has had a lot of ordinary games over the past four weeks, but this one came against Notre Dame on national television. Too many Heisman voters were watching this game and will find this clunker impossible to ignore. A mediocre game against Arizona late at night in a win? Not too many will care. This? In South Bend in prime time? Different story. Frequently, the Heisman — in the 21st century — has gone to a player who was in the national championship conversation to some degree in late November. Caleb was in the conversation last year. Not being in the conversation this year (assuming USC loses one more game before Thanksgiving) will undeniably hurt. USC probably did need to make the playoff in 2023 for a Caleb repeat to be a strong possibility.

A Heisman repeat is all but out of the question as the school will likely miss their second straight College Football Playoff in Lincoln Riley's tenure.

Riley's leadership and Williams' poor game left USC the target of heavy criticism after another presumed failure of a season this week.

Things won't get any easier for the Trojans in their next contest as their heated nemesis in Utah come to town for an imperative matchup that will say much about the university in due time.
