In a press release put out on Friday, the Pac-12 released its financial numbers from the 2021-22 fiscal year. The conference had record total revenues of $581 million and record distributions at $444 million, representing an average of $37 million per member university, per the release.

“We are pleased to have generated record revenues and distributions for our members in this first reported year coming out of the pandemic,” Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff said in the release. “These revenues are used by our campus athletic departments to provide invaluable support to our over 7,000 student-athletes annually and to fulfill our mission to develop the next generation of leaders.”

Ana Mari Cauce, the President of the University of Washington and Chair of the Pac-12 Board of Directors added: “The record financial results announced today position the Pac-12 for future growth and success as we continue our media rights discussions. Most importantly this growth enables us to provide best-in-class support for our student-athletes, from health and well-being to academic and athletic education, training and opportunities.”

IMPENDING TV DEAL?

The $37 million revenue split is the most in the history of the Pac-12, but it's dwarfed by the revenue Big Ten schools and schools in other Power Five conferences will make in the future.

The Big Ten's new media rights deal with Fox, CBS and NBC is for seven years and worth more than $7 billion. It begins on July 1. In the first two years of the deal, schools are expected to earn around $62.5 million each. That number will jump up to between $80 million to $100 million once USC and UCLA join and CBS begins to air more of the conference's games.

Every other Power Five conference will distribute over $37 million per school in the future.

The Pac-12's current TV deal expires in 2024 and the conference — after months and months of negotiations — is still in the process of trying to land a new one. It's unlikely the new deal will be anywhere close to the Big Ten's.
