In this story:

The USC Trojans football team is full of great offensive options for quarterback Caleb Williams. Their wide receiving room is stacked with talent, and it has made things easy for Williams.

Having all of these guys who can make plays with the ball in their hands allows some pressure to be taken from Williams, and it also starts to build trust between them all. But over the last few games, there has been one wide receiver that has started to stand out against the rest of them, senior Brenden Rice.

“After an up-and-down 2022 where he posted one of the worst overall catch-per-target percentages of USC receivers, the senior wideout’s chemistry with Williams has sizzled on deep balls and scrambles thus far in ‘23. And in a homecoming in Arizona against ASU on Saturday, Rice staked his claim as the Trojans’ go-to outside receiver heading into the meat of their Pac-12 schedule, racking up 133 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches.”

Rice gives the Trojans a legitimate weapon to use in this offense, and it makes for matchup nightmares for the opposition. Having him alongside the others gives USC a true pick-your-poison type of situation.

The Trojans coaching staff has been very praise-worthy of Rice, and what he brings to the table. His emergence this season has eased the minds of the entire team.

“He’s taking what we’re preaching in the meeting rooms, you know … we [going to] spread the ball around, and everyone’s going to get their spot,” outside receivers coach Dennis Simmons said this past week. “So it’s on you now to maximize it and show what you can do when you get it.”

Rice made easy work of the defense this past weekend, adding to his total for the year. For the year, he has 12 catches for 254 yards and five touchdowns.

The chemistry that he has built with Williams has allowed this offense to run like a well-oiled machine. It’s been great to see, and as the year goes on, the connection between them will get that much more important.
