USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch addresses media for first time since Cotton Bowl

Granch hopes USC's defense will be more consistent in 2023

LOS ANGELES — For the first time since USC's 46-45 Cotton Bowl defeat to Tulane, Trojans defensive coordinator Alex Grinch addressed the media on Tuesday following USC's fourth spring practice.

When asked about how he'll make changes on defense following the Cotton Bowl, Grinch responded:

"You start with individual calls. Basically you rehash the entirety of the season. And then you start with explosive plays and rip the bandaids off real quick. You start with the negative. That's the appropriate thing to do. You first look at it from the lens of a coaching staff perspective. What can we do to affect the behavior of our guys?"

Grinch spent three minutes on that response. When he was then asked about the disconnect between what fans saw on the field compared to what he teaches, Grinch responded:

"I think it's ongoing. I don't think anything specific to us is unique. It's a lack of consistency and where does consistency come from? You've got to go back to preparation. In other instances, you've got to make sure you have the strength to execute at an appropriate level. You've got to be able to get off blocks."
