USC Football: Alex Grinch's Defense Under Fire Again After Shaky Coverage Of Cal

In this story:
Even in victory, your USC Trojans found a way to make life tough on themselves. It has been a frustrating year all around for USC, and it seems to be getting worse.
The team did take down the Cal Golden Bears this past weekend by a score of 50-49, but the game never should have been that close. They made Cal look like one of the best teams in the Pac-12, and it all started with their lackluster defensive performance once again.
Cal was able to pretty much do whatever they wanted against the Trojans defense on Saturday, and it once again showed the issues of this team.
“The Bears were like a knife going through warm butter against USC’s gooey, mushy, and very soft defensive line, particularly in the first half when Bear Alexander was serving a one-half suspension for his targeting penalty the week before against Utah.”

It was another poor outing for the Trojans defensive unit, and it exposed more issues with this team. They made the Golden Bears look like a juggernaut offensively, and the team almost dropped the game because of it.
Cal running back Jadyn Ott carved up the Trojans defense and made them look silly. He took over the game and almost singly-handedly ended any hopes that the Trojans had of making noise in the Pac-12 still.
“Ott rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns. He made things look very easy when Bear Alexander was not in the game. USC did create some turnovers against Cal, but 49 points allowed to a 3-5 football team remains the number one fact about this game for the Trojans, even in victory.”

As the Trojans get ready to face off against Washington, Oregon and UCLA in their final three games, things will need to tighten up. If they perform the way that they did this past weekend, they will be blown off the field against the stronger competition.
