USC Football: Caleb Williams Professes Ignorance Of Chicago Sports Legends Prior To Draft

Uh oh.

Heisman Trophy-winning superstar USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams, expected to be one of the top picks in the 2024 NFL draft, expressed relative ignorance with regard to the excellence of the two biggest stars in Chicago sports history, per Pete Thamel of ESPN. That'd be Chicago Bulls shooting guard Michael Jordan and Chicago Bears wide receiver Walter Payton.

The Chicago Bears possess the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, and have been rumored to have an interest in moving on from their incumbent play caller Justin Fields.

"I'm 22. I didn't really get to see those players," Williams said. "As the saying goes, the legends live on. That's my goal of playing football -- it's not money, it's not fame ... it's to be immortal. I want to reach that sense of being a legend. Being at the table ... and having a rightful seat through hard work and energy and time I've put into this game that we all love.”

"It's appealing to be in a city like that. With legends that you've looked up to ... reach for the standard they set and try to do anything to get there."

Chicago, of course, is renowned as one of the great sports towns in the country, and Williams would have to do a whole lot of catching up to secure his own place in the Windy City's pantheon of greats.
