USC Football: Defensive Coordinator Reveals How Summer Prep Is Paying Off

In this story:

Through three games of the new college football season, it’s apparent that the USC Trojans defense is living up to the hype from the offseason. The Trojans said that they believed things improved over the summer, and so far, they have been correct.

Entering the year, many were wondering how it would hold up again this year, but it’s clear that they have improved themselves.

Defense cost the Trojans last season, but they are getting after opposing teams this year. It’s unlike last season where they relied heavily on turnovers.

Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch spoke on what has been working for his guys so far this season.

“When you’re bigger, faster and stronger, you should be able to attack other humans in a different way.”

Per Alex Grinch

He credits the offseason work that the Trojans did in helping them improve this season. Grinch entered the year on the hot seat because USC couldn’t afford another poor effort from the defensive side of the ball.

The biggest change for the Trojans is their effort while on the field. You can see it in each play, and it seems like a breath of fresh air from last season.

USC will start to see better competition than what they have dealt with so far, but we can’t discount what they have done. It’s been impressive to see, and they can continue building on this.

USC gets a week off to fine-tune some things before they take on Arizona State. It will be a good test for this new and improved defense to see if they can translate the success away from the friendly confines of the LA Coliseum.

The Trojans were already one of the most dangerous teams around the country with a questionable defense. But now adding in one that can come to play well, that should scare the rest of college football.
