In this story:

After another loss this past weekend, the USC Trojans football team is reeling. That makes two consecutive games that the Trojans have dropped, and their dream of winning a National Championship this season is over.

Another game where the defense couldn’t step up to the plate and do their job now sees the Trojans with a missed opportunity. Matt Zemek of Trojans Wire believes that it is well past time to let go of defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, and many fans seem to think this is a needed move.

“That’s it. That has to be it. That has to be the end for Alex Grinch at USC. He will coach the rest of the regular season, with his final game being on November 18 versus UCLA.”

Per Matt Zemek of Trojans Wire

The defense under Grinch has been poor for a while now, but the team has refused to make any changes. Head coach Lincoln Riley has stood by Grinch without hesitation, despite all of the issues on defense this season.

Riley has even gone back against the narrative that the Trojans' defense isn’t as bad as people say, showing a clear lack of understanding of the situation. While it’s nice to see Riley standing up for a member of his staff, accountability must be taken.

The defense has caused issue after issue, and now the Trojans are faced with the reality of another wasted season.

“They couldn’t beat a Utah team which was without Cam Rising at quarterback. They couldn’t make Utah’s offense — which was below average for most of the season — look below average. They couldn’t limit a Utah offense which had considerable limitations.”

Per Matt Zemek of Trojans Wire

The defense has been a problem for some time now and showed once again that they couldn’t be trusted against Utah. It has become real trouble week in and week out for this team.

USC needs to regroup this week against Cal to get themselves back on track. They still have a tough schedule down the stretch, with games against both Oregon and Washington.

The Pac-12 title is still alive, even if just barely. So, USC has to take a look in the mirror and let their pride come out. They can salvage the season, but it will take an entire team effort in order to do so.
