USC football: Observations from Trojans' 7th spring practice of 2023

LOS ANGELES — USC football had its seventh spring practice of 2023 on Tuesday. Below are some observations.

WHAT WE SAW

- The first player out of the looker room was long snapper Daniel Meunier.

- Class of 2023 defensive lineman signee Deijon Laffitte was on campus today. He'll enroll in the summer. 

- Class of 2026 Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.) running back Deshonne Redeaux watched USC’s practice and walked out with players.

- Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and Bookie Radley-Hiles were chatting on the way out to the practice field.

- Defensive line coach Shaun Nua pulled back defensive lineman Devan Thompkins on the way to the practice field to make sure he touched the Trojan Sword.

- Tuli Tuipulotu continues to hang around campus. He walked into practice, but not from the locker room. 

- A car skidded to a halt to allow Korey Foreman to cross McClintock Ave. and enter the practice field.

- During warmups, quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Miller Moss led two lines of teammates. Jake Jensen was behind Williams in line and Malachi Nelson was behind Moss.

- In other lines, running back Austin Jones, linebacker Tackett Curtis, linebacker Shane Lee, defensive lineman Solomon Tuliaupupu and defensive lineman Kyon Barrs were leaders.

- In USC's next warmup drill, where defensive players run from their formation to the back corner of the end zone, the 11 players in the first unit were: Domani Jackson, Anthony Lucas, Calen Bullock, Raesjon Davis, Jamil Muhammad, Jaylin Smith, Ceyair Wright, Bryson Shaw, Shane Lee, De’jon Benton and Kyon Barrs.

- In safety drills where players tackle a donut, Prophet Brown's timing got messed up and Grinch yelled out "Oh sh*t!" with a smile.

- All three quarterbacks threw slants to receivers when they started throwing. 

- Raleek Brown, who was a running back last year, continues to work a lot at slot receiver.

- Nelson threw a slant to Brenden Rice that he picked up off his shoestrings to haul in. Later in practice, Nelson tossed a beautiful end zone fade to Lake McRee. 

- During a linebacker drill with three trash cans set up in a line to work on agility, Mason Cobb took the first rep.
