USC Football: Sun Belt QB Pinpointed As Ideal Trojans Target

Is he someone USC would make a move for?

With Caleb Williams presumably headed for the NFL, Lincoln Riley is in a bit of an interesting situation.

Will the Trojans stick with their preexisting stable of quarterbacks? Or -- will Riley dip his toes into the transfer portal for more of a veteran, proven commodity?

As of right now, the only two scholarship quarterbacks returning to the team would be Miller Moss and Malachi Nelson. Moss will be a redshirt senior next season, and he has played sparingly throughout his career. Nelson is a former 5-star prospect with sky-high upside. However, he'll be a redshirt freshman in 2024.

The need for another body at the position is obvious. You'd also have to ask Riley whether he believes Nelson will be ready next year to lead the program. Moss is a solid player, but he's more so the type of guy you want waiting in the wings as a game manager.

As such, why not pursue a multi-time Player of the Year from the Sun Belt?

Grayson McCall has developed into one of the best small-school QBs in the country over the last few years. Hailing from Coastal Carolina, McCall is a three-time Sun Belt Player of the Year.

In five years, he has a career TD: INT ratio of 88:14. McCall has also thrown for over 10,000 yards during this time. He's a tough, aggressive kid with vocal leadership skills and a true moxie on the field. Well-liked by his teammates, he's the type of player your team can rally around.

For McCall, playing up a level is a nice opportunity to further his development as he aims for an NFL career. USC will surely be battling a host of programs for his services (likely multiple schools from the SEC and the ACC).

With that said, contacting McCall seems like the prudent thing to do for a program in need of some stability. He'll bring immediate respect to the locker room and can act as a galvanizing force as the team enters the Big Ten.
