USC Volleyball: 2023 Women of Troy Houston Season Opener Preview

The time has come!

It has been quite the long summer but your USC women's volleyball team has finally touched down in Houston ahead of their first three matches of the 2023 season. The Women of Troy are ranked number 22 according to the NCAA's database and will face a number of respectable opponents during this weekend trip.

First off, they are set to take on Houston at the Fertitta Center today at 6 pm PT for the first time since 2003. This match will be streamed on ESPN+ and USC should have plenty of motivation in this match due to their undefeated record against Houston along with the fact that they are ranked higher than them at number 19 in the nation... let's see how our stars react.

Speaking of stars, a number of USC's players will be returning home especially senior Skylar Fields who logged three seasons at the University of Texas before moving down to Southern California.

Fields plays outside hitter for the Women of Troy and she boasts quite the impressive resume after being named to the AVCA All-America First Team, Pac-12 All-Conference Team and Trojan All-Tournament Team in the 2022 season.

Fields left a simple message for the city of Houston in the comment section of USC women's volleyball team's Instagram.

"Houston... we have a problem."

After this first match on Friday, USC will then look to face off against both Rice University and The University of Southern Mississippi.

Rice enters this season as the 23rd best team in the nation just behind the Women of Troy and they lost their single game against USC back in 2016. This matchup will take place on Saturday at 4 pm PT and will once again be available to stream on ESPN+.

As for Southern Mississippi, Fields and the rest of USC's squad will have their hands full with them on Sunday at 9 am PT to end off their weekend trip. This match will be held at the Fertitta Center once again and even though it's the first meeting between both schools, it will not be streamed.

According to a recent USC press release, other teammates of Fields will also be playing near their hometowns during these matches making it that much more special.

"Fr. OH and Fr. MB were each born in Houston. London's mother Morgan played volleyball and her father Indi ran track for the Cougars. Her older brother Indiana Wijay is a freshman quarterback at Houston. Leah's father Kirk was a captain for the Houston basketball team."(Via USC Athletics)
