The Utes May Still Be in the Market for a QB in the Spring Transfer Period

With spring camp coming to an end, Kyle Whittingham may still be on the lookout for a QB2 in the transfer portal, despite the current battle being described as a "dead heat".

With the finale of spring camp upon us, and the spring transfer window opening soon after, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham hasn't ruled out the possibility of fishing for a QB despite the close battle that is currently taking place between Brandon Rose and Isaac Wilson.

Whittingham said, "We’ll see what happens. We’ll evaluate spring in its entirety once it’s over with. Portal opens this coming Tuesday. So it’s very possible that we may be in the market, but maybe not. We just have to see what we think is best moving forward once we have the chance to look at all the evaluations."

All signs point to the Utes actively looking for another QB, especially with four to five scholarship spots still up for grabs. The Utes currently have three scholarship QBs in Cam Rising, Brandon Rose, and Isaac Wilson, but due to the lack of experience from Rose and Wilson, it would make sense to target one or two more, especially with the weight this upcoming season holds.

Coach Whitt said "we’re one shy and so the short answer is yes, depending on what happens after spring, we could add another two more" in an interview back in January regarding the desire to have four scholarship QBs on the roster come the start of the 2024 season.

As spring camp has gone on, Whittingham has become more lenient on the idea of bringing in a transfer QB, saying "maybe, maybe not" when asked if they'd be in the market during the spring transfer window. Rose and Wilson have impressed in practice sessions up to this point, which has prompted Whitt to deem the battle "a dead heat".

It remains to be seen which direction Coach Whittingham and the Utes decide to go following the conclusion of spring camp, but whichever side the coin lands on, transfer experience or homegrown talent, it'll surely be the best decision for the team heading into the 2024 campaign.
