Virginia Takes Sole Possession of First Place in the ACC

The Cavaliers control their own destiny in the race for the ACC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament

The Cavaliers certainly didn't play their best basketball this week, beating the bottom two teams in the ACC by a combined five points. But, because Virginia was able to come away with two tight wins over Louisville and Notre Dame, the Hoos now control their own destiny in the ACC. 

With Pittsburgh losing at Virginia Tech on Saturday evening, Virginia (21-4, 13-3 ACC) has taken sole possession of first place at the top of the ACC standings. Miami is in second and trails UVA by half a game at 13-4 and Pittsburgh is third at 12-4.

With UVA losing its only games against Pittsburgh and Miami this season, those teams own the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Cavaliers. So if Virginia was to end up tied in the ACC standings with either Pitt or Miami at the end of the regular season, the teams would share the ACC regular season title, but Pitt or Miami would get the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament. 

After the results of this weekend, though, the Cavaliers now control their own destiny. If Virginia can win its final four games of the regular season, the Cavaliers will clinch the outright ACC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament. UVA's final four games of the regular season are as follows:

Wednesday, February 22 at Boston College
Saturday, February 25 at North Carolina
Tuesday, February 28 vs. Clemson
Saturday, March 4 vs. Louisville

Virginia is seeking its sixth ACC regular season title in the last ten seasons and 11th in program history.
