On3 Sports' Talia Goodman reported earlier today that Virginia Tech guard Sophie Swanson intends to enter the transfer portal. Swanson, a 5-foot-10 guard from Barrington, Illinois, will have one year of eligibility at her next stop.

Swanson played sparingly with the Hokies in her lone year with the program. Across the season, she played for 150 minutes, averaging 2.3 points per game (48) total. She shot 26.2% from the field and 18.9% from the three-point line. Swanson scored in each of her first four games of the season, but went scoreless in five of her next six.

The guard concluded her stint at Virginia Tech with a five-point performance against nine-seed Oregon in the Round of 64 in the NCAA Tournament.

Before her time with the Hokies, Swanson spent two years with Purdue. In her time with the Boilermakers, Swanson played in 55 games, starting eight (all in sophomore season). In her freshman season, Swanson averaged 7.1 points per game, sporting a 41.9% clip from the field — including a 39.4% mark from beyond the arc. Her strongest performance of her freshman year came against Nebraska in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament, where she totaled 25 points on a 9-of-13 clip from the field, including a 7-of-9 tally from long range.

In the 2024-25 campaign, Swanson averaged 8.9 points per game on 36.3%/30.1%/81.5% splits. Against Penn State on Feb. 27, 2025, Swanson totaled a career-high 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting (5-of-6 from three-point range).

However, the team around her struggled. Purdue lost nine straight to fall to 0-10 in league play and dropped four of its final five to conclude the season with a 10-19 (3-15 Big Ten) record. Following the campaign, Swanson entered the transfer portal and committed to Virginia Tech. Her highest point totals in her lone year with the Hokies were six points, accomplished twice (vs. Presbyterian, Wake Forest).

Swanson is the second Virginia Tech player to announce her intentions to enter the transfer portal, joining Kayl Petersen, who announced on March 26. Swanson will be looking to join her third school in four years.

With Swanson's departure, Virginia Tech now sits at 12 scholarship players, three below the maximum number allotted of 15. Here's what Virginia Tech's 2026-27 roster currently looks like, in regard to eligibility:

  • Alyssa Latham (Gr.)
  • Carleigh Wenzel (r-Sr.)
  • Carys Baker (Sr.)
  • Mackenzie Nelson (r-Jr.)
  • Samyha Suffren (r-Jr.)
  • Leila Wells (Jr.)
  • Spela Brecelj (So.)
  • Amani Jenkins (So.)
  • Aniya Trent (So.)
  • Kate Sears (r-Fr.)
  • Kaleo Anderson (Fr.)
  • Arianna Harris-Mott (Fr.)
