Despite 43 combined points from their starting guards on Senior Night, Wake Forest fell to Boston College 71-69 in a heartbreaking loss in their final regular-season game at home.

Wake Forest fell victim to the run in the second half, allowing the Eagles to score 27 of 30 points and jump out to a big lead. Despite a last ditch effort to get back into the game, Boston College did just enough to leave Winston-Salem with the victory.

With both Tyree Appleby and Bobi Klintman scoring five points before the first media timeout, Wake Forest jumped out to an early 12-2 lead against the Eagles. Out of the timeout, though, Boston College woke up and fought back into the game, scoring eight of the next nine points.

With five-straight points, Boston College momentarily took the lead midway through the first half, but leading into the under-eight, a Matthew Marsh dunk tied the game at 22.

In the final 1:28, Wake Forest put away the last six points of the first half, taking the 32-26 lead into the halftime locker room.

With five-straight points early in the second half, Wake Forest opened their lead back up to nine, but a quick and-one conversion by Makai Ashton-Langford took it back to six. From there, the Eagles added six more points to solidify an 8-0 run and take the Deacs’ lead down to a slim one.

With Wake Forest embarking on a scoring drought of over three minutes, Boston College continued their scoring streak to take a four-point lead, forcing Steve Forbes to call a timeout.

After two free throws that temporarily gave a respite from the Boston College onslaught, the Eagles picked up right where they left off, scoring five additional points to lead by seven at the under-12 timeout. At that point, Boston College had scored 18 of the last 20.

Then, after one Cameron Hildreth free throw, Boston College scored seven-straight to take a 15-point lead. But, with back-to-back threes from Appleby, Wake Forest didn’t call it quits, decreasing the deficit to nine. With a Daivien Williamson three-pointer, the Deacs were within six, and Earl Grant called a timeout to settle the Eagles.

After cutting the lead to four with back-to-back layups, Ashton-Langford appeared to have put the dagger in Wake Forest with a deep three. But, on the next possession, Williamson knocked one of his own. With the deficit again at just four, Forbes called a timeout with 3:24 remaining on the clock.

With an alley-oop from Lucas Taylor to Klintman, Wake Forest took the deficit down to just one possession, but a Boston College layup on the other end kept the Eagles ahead with a slim lead.

Following a big defensive stop, Williamson knocked down a near-impossible three pointer off the bank to get the Deacs within one. With 45 seconds left on the clock, Grant called a timeout for Boston College.

Out of the timeout, Quinten Post nailed a shot with three seconds remaining on the shot clock, but Appleby responded with an and-one to tie the game. Ashton-Langford laid in what would be the game-winner three seconds left, and the Deacs couldn’t secure a final shot, giving Boston College the two-point victory.

Wake Forest will return to action for the final regular season game on Saturday against Syracuse. Tipoff is set for 5pm ET on ACCNX.
