The 3-Headed Makeup of This Husky Football Team

The UW still has a fairly healthy divide of personnel coming from different directions.

This is Kalen DeBoer's University of Washington football team, no question about it, no debate whatsoever over who's in charge and putting his stamp on things.

DeBoer and his staff have made the long-storied program accountable again, instantly successful, poised for added greatness.

This is Husky football, meeting expectations once more in Montlake.

Yet to give credit where all credit is due in putting this collection of football talent together, these Huskies still carry the strong influence of three different coaching staffs — Chris Petersen, Jimmy Lake and DeBoer's.

Unlike USC and Colorado, which did dramatic roster overhauls in one fell swoop while moving from one coaching staff to another, the UW has embraced the added challenge of dealing with having three leaders over the four previous seasons. That's a lot of program change in a relatively short amount of time on a college football clock.

Breaking down the 119 football players prepared to take part in Wednesday morning's opening of fall camp, DeBoer and his coaches have brought in 65 of them, or 54.6 percent. That's 41 scholarship Huskies and 24 walk-ons.

The roster still boasts 22 players, or 18.4 percent, who arrived during the Petersen era that ended in 2019, with all but junior reserve linebacker Drew Fowler pulling on a helmet and pads with a scholarship in hand.

Finally, 32 Husky football players, or 26.8 percent, remain in the program as Lake arrivals: 20 on scholarship and 12 walk-ons.

DeBoer admirably came in and took over inherited talent, added a high-profile starting quarterback in Michael Penix Jr. and a few other pieces, and made a lot of winning happen again.

He has Petersen recruits this season and next before they're all gone with their eligibility expiring.
