In this story:

Friday's Washington football practice was as brief as it's been all spring in terms of availability to the media. There were no team periods to observe, as head coach Kalen DeBoer opted to save all those snaps for what he said was a shorter scrimmage than the first, which spanned almost 90 plays.

The two things that DeBoer highlighted as points of emphasis were red-zone snaps and reps for the third-stringers, who the head coach said were able to get around 15 plays in on Friday.

With just one week remaining before the Spring Preview on April 22, DeBoer seems very happy with the progress that his team has made this spring. He spent a portion of Friday's press conference highlighting a few names on both sides of the ball who have stood out all spring.

The first two he mentioned were wide receivers Germie Bernard and Giles Jackson. "Both really continued to get better [all week] and have improved in different ways," DeBoer said. "Germie's getting more comfortable in the offense and the ball's finding him. He's in the right spot, quarterbacks trust and believe in him, and he's making the plays he needs to make."

"Giles has been really tough to tackle in tight confines," he continued. "Not so much on kickoff stuff right now. ... He's catching the ball in the middle of the field and doing a nice job making guys miss."

Defensively, DeBoer had tons of praise for junior-college transfer cornerback Thaddeus Dixon, who recorded an interception during Friday's scrimmage. "He's adjusted very well. ... He's a confident guy, so that helps. He makes enough plays, he plays physical and I think that our whole team has a lot of respect for what he's done."

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
