If healthy, last year's starter could provide a big boost to the UW defensive line.

In this story:

Washington's defensive line has recorded just three sacks through two games but reinforcements could be on the way. Junior defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele, a 13-game starter in 2022, missed both contests after sustaining a minor injury during warmups, but appears to be near a return to action.

During his Monday news conference, Kalen DeBoer said Tuitele was in a similar regimen to running back Dillon Johnson, who offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said is training at "94 percent."

The most important thing Tuitele will bring to the defensive line is an extra body to the rotation. Running with just four players at defensive tackle is difficult for any team. Tuitele's return enables everyone at the position to take fewer snaps and remain fresher throughout the game.

Combined with Tuitele's ability to rush the passer, the Huskies could get a more significant push from the interior of the defensive line.

Washington also also had some trouble defending the run early on and Tuitele should be able to provide more support against the ground game. He's good at using his lengthy reach to prevent offensive linemen from getting their hands on his chest and drive him off his spot.

If Tuitele is able to hold his gaps and get his hands on a running back, even if he doesn't bring him down, he has the ability to disrupt the offense enough for one of his teammates to finish the play.

The former four-star recruit has the talent to make an impact at the college level, but his health always has held him back.

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
