I don’t know what is was or who it was, but someone or something obviously pissed off the Washington Husky football team last week.

Whoever or whatever it was that managed to get under the Dawg’s collective skin, allow me to be the first to say publicly: Thank you.

These Huskies are a ragtag bunch of OKG’s. Student Athletes. Nice guys. But they showed up to Husky Stadium on Saturday afternoon with an enormous chip on their shoulder, ready to make someone pay for their new, ill-tempered disposition. Unfortunately for the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, they were the team that was scheduled to be in Husky Stadium on Saturday to feel the wrath of this pack of hungry and angry Dawgs.

The Huskies started out with a blistering 21-0 first quarter. Jacob Eason got the ball rolling on the third play from scrimmage with a 47 yard touchdown toss to tight end Hunter Bryant. On the very next Husky possession, Sean McGrew fought his way through the Rainbow Warrior defense for a 22 yard touchdown run, and before the quarter would end, true freshman Puka Nucua would catch his first collegiate TD,  rounding out a whirlwind first quarter for the Dawgs. The Husky defense came out just as relentless. The secondary left little room for Hawaii’s receivers to make their magic happen, and the Warriors top QB, Cole McDonald seemed to be confused and flustered from the very first series of the game. McDonald was benched early in the first quarter, as the Warriors tried to get him settled on the sidelines. But Hawaii’s backup QB Chevan Cordeiro didn’t have any better luck in his absence, going 2-7 through the air and getting sacked to boot. After a couple of series, Cole McDonald was back at the helm of the sinking Rainbow Warrior’s ship. He was able to architect a drive that led to the Rainbow Warriors first score of the half and the Huskies took a 38-7 lead into halftime.

Hawaii started the second half off with a couple of impressive, time consuming drives, both resulting in touchdowns for the Warriors. But the Husky offense rose to the challenge, scoring another 14 points in the second half to secure the win and end Hawaii’s 2019 Pac 12 win streak at 2 (with wins earlier this season vs Arizona and Oregon State).

The Husky defense appeared to bend to the pressure of Hawaii’s high flying offense in the third quarter, but a timely interception and 19 yard return by true freshman safety Cameron Williams in the 4th quarter seemed to crush the last bit of hope that the Rainbow Warriors might have had. Having zero turnovers on the season before Saturday afternoon’s contest, the Husky defense was finally able to get the turnover monkey off their back - taking away 3 of the Warriors pass attempts on the day, with Husky Senior Myles Bryant adding 2 interceptions to the Dawgs turnover tally.

The Husky offense finished the day with 450 total yards of offense and Washington secured a 52-20 victory over Hawaii. The Dawgs hit the road next Saturday and head down to Provo, Utah to take on the BYU Cougars in the Huskies final non-conference game of the season. It is scheduled to be a 12 PM kickoff.
