Maurice Heims, the University of Washington edge rusher injured near the end of the first spring football practice, was cleared to go home on Monday night after he was transported to a Seattle hospital and underwent multiple tests, the athletic department disclosed.

A 6-foot-5, 246-pound sophomore, Heims similarly sent out a positive message about himself on Monday night nearly seven hours after he suffered what was believed to be a neck injury, though the school didn't specify that.

"I appreciate all the thoughts and prayers," Heims tweeted at 7:20 p.m. "I’ll be back in no time! Love you all."

Heims, who hails from Hamburg, Germany, collided with a teammate on a pass rush and was left prone on the artificial playing surface of Dempsey Indoor, with team trainers immediately surrounding him.

While Monday's practice did not involve full contact, with players touched down rather than tackled hard to the ground, the activity still remains frenzied and involves extra-fit Huskies moving at a very high rate of speed.

Heims apparently got caught in an awkward position as he tried to pressure quarterback Michael Penix Jr. He was left lying on his back while the trainers checked his extremities before gently lifting him onto a board and strapping him down.

Paramedics arrived roughly 12 minutes after the mishap and transported him to an unidentified hospital, though Harborview Medical Center generally is used for trauma care.

Early Tuesday, the UW released the following statement regarding the Husky player on social media:

“Following a collision during Monday’s practice, Maurice Heims was transported to a local hospital where he underwent several medical tests. He was cleared to return home earlier this evening where he is recovering.”

Spring practice resumes with a second session on Wednesday morning.
