Which Offensive Newcomers Can Light Fireworks In 2023?

In this story:

The Fourth of July always calls for fireworks and since the Huskies shoot them off after every scoring play when at home, which newcomers to the Washington offense in 2023 will help cue the pyrotechnics (and siren) this season?

Most media outlets are expecting Washington to be one of the nation's top offenses in 2023 and while Preseason All-American receivers Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan will continue to produce at a high level, they can't do it alone. With that being said, I limited myself to one player at each skill position.

RB Dillon Johnson

The Mississippi State transfer is expected to shoulder the majority of the void left by Wayne Taulapapa, who received 164 touches and scored 12 touchdowns in 2022. Johnson, who has 12 career touchdowns in the SEC looked like a different kind of athlete at the position during spring practice and could replicate those numbers if he can stay healthy.

While he was limited through most of the spring, recovering from a knee injury he suffered in 2022, he's expected to be ready to go by September 2 when the Huskies take on Boise State.

WR Germie Bernard

Making his return to Washington following his freshman year at Michigan State, Bernard has all the makings of a future star. He found a way to make a spectacular catch and rip off a chunk play in nearly every spring practice and will be a huge part of offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb's game plan this fall, even if he doesn't crack the starting lineup.

TE Josh Cuevas

While the Cal Poly transfer might not see the field a ton in his first year on Montlake, the coaching staff has raved about his ability as both a blocker and a receiver. There will almost certainly be plays and personnel packages designed to include Cuevas, especially in the red zone and he could end up leading all Husky tight ends in touchdowns.

ROMAN TOMASHOFF

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
