While Washington has added both depth and talent at running back through the transfer portal over the last two years, it appears the coaching staff still wants to find a role for local product Sam Adams II. With a crowded room in front of him, what is both the short- and long-term outlook for the former four-star recruit?

Listed at 6-foot-2 and 206 pounds, Adams played in nine games during the 2022 season, his first action in a Husky uniform because of injuries that hampered him in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He has the ability to make an impact whenever he's on the field, but there's a chance he won't sit any higher than fourth on the depth chart to begin the season.

Currently behind transfers Dillon Johnson and Daniyel Ngata, as well as returning junior Cameron Davis, the coaching staff will have to pick and choose certain spots to get him on the field. He seems to fit best as a pass-catcher, but so do all three guys ahead of him and former Nebraska transfer Will Nixon, so saying snaps are going to be hard to come by feels like an understatement.

"Mentally, he might be an older guy," said running backs coach Lee Marks. "Physically and a lot of those things, he's still catching up to where he should have been at this point if he'd been playing the last two years."

In all likelihood, the easiest way onto the field for Adams is probably going to be sparingly in blowouts. However, the coaching staff is enthused about what he brings to the table and seems to be searching for ways to get him more involved.

"Really, where I think it's going to be fun," Marks said, "is to see where Sammy is going to be even a year from now."

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
