In this story:

As the rumors of conference realignment begin to swirl yet again and the Blue Angels soared over Lake Washington, Kalen DeBoer had to prepare his team for its season opener against Boise State on September 2. On Thursday, the defense held its own, but the offense was still able to rip off a couple of big plays.

Redshirt freshman wide receiver Denzel Boston has continued building on his strong spring, reeling in a 71-yard touchdown reception from Michael Penix with cornerback Jaivion Green in tight coverage. Walk-on sophomore receiver Owen Coutts also found himself in the end zone, going over the top of cornerback Thaddeus Dixon to reel in a 41-yard score.

The Husky defense appeared ready to take a step forward, headlined by redshirt freshman Tristan Dunn. He deflected a pass during the early team period of practice and recorded a sack of Dylan Morris later on while blitzing from his Husky position.

The defensive line as a whole had a very good day on Thursday, putting a fair amount of heat on both Penix and Morris. Ulumoo Ale recorded a sack, while Faatui Tuitele and Lance Holtzclaw both made their way into the backfield and recorded a pressure on the quarterback on multiple occasions.

Inside the notebook

  • After allowing a touchdown on a blown coverage on Wednesday, it was a much better day for Asa Turner. During the first team period, he baited Michael Penix into a bad throw, but couldn't quite reel in the interception, settling for a pass breakup instead.
  • The coaching staff experimented with a lot of different personnel groupings on Thursday. Zach Durfee, Jaivion Green, Thaddeus Dixon, and Gaard Memmelaar all took reps with the first team, while Landen Hatchett took reps at left guard with the second team.
  • Scott Huff seems to want the younger Hatchett to be prepared for many different scenarios, as he's now taken snaps at both guard spots, as well as center since enrolling in the spring.
  • A few players, including edge rusher Bralen Trice, went down briefly with what appeared to be cramping issues. None of it appeared serious and every player who suffered a cramp returned to practice.

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
