Like dedicated golfers, some veteran University of Washington football players have dropped into single digits as they prepare to enter spring practice.

In this case, it's the reveal of the new jersey number.

Beginning Monday, senior inside linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio will answer to No. 5, senior edge rusher Zion Tupuola-Fetui will wear No. 4, junior cornerback Mishael Powell has put his dibs on No. 3 and sophomore cornerback Davon Banks has claimed No. 6.

Previously, they wore 48, 58, 23 and 10, respectively, in Montlake.

Also, junior defensive tackle Voi Tunuufi gave up his Steve Emtman No. 90 in favor or 52.

During the spring, Ulofoshio had considered changing to No. 4, was listed as such and then reconsidered, for reasons unknown.

Among the transfers, junior cornerback Jabbar Muhammad from Oklahoma State will answer to No. 1, sophomore wide receiver Germie Bernard from Michigan State also will wear No. 4, junior running back Dillon Johnson from Mississippi State will pull on No. 7, junior cornerback Thaddeus Dixon from Long Beach CC has picked No. 9, senior linebacker Ralen Goforth from USC has requested No. 10, sophomore linebacker Zach Durfee from Sioux falls will wear No. 15, junior running back Daniyel Ngata from Arizona State has chosen No. 21 and sophomore tight end Josh Cuevas from Cal Poly has selected No. 85.

While not all incoming freshman will take part in spring practice, the handful that are ready to go include cornerback Caleb Presley, who will wear No. 2, while linebacker Deven Bryant has No. 17, running back Tybo Rogers settled on No. 20, safety Diesel Gordon will don No. 26, edge rusher Anthony James has selected No. 47, offensive lineman Zach Henning took No. 58, center Landon Hatchett will model No. 66 and defensive tackle Elinneus Davis will wear No. 90

We'll learn the back stories to these jersey preferences from the players as spring football evolves.
