Most practices this spring have gotten off to a slower start, with the offense looking a little out of sync during the first team period of the day. That wasn't the case on Wednesday, as the Husky offense was firing on all cylinders, creating a number of explosive plays.

The first came from Jalen McMillan, who threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Rome Odunze on a trick play. Then, the second team took over, and Dylan Morris completed a 55-yard bomb to Denzel Boston on the first play of the drive, who would have scored if he hadn't tripped after coming down with the ball.

Finally, freshman running back Tybo Rogers took a wheel route for another 40-yard touchdown on the final play of the opening team period. Then, later on in practice, things started to get chippy as it appears the Huskies are ready to hit someone other than their teammates.

During the second team period, a few skirmishes broke out between the offense and the defense. While it was unclear what caused the brawl, by the end, it was clear that this Husky team has a bunch of players that won't back down from anyone.

Offensive lineman Gaard Memmelaar and safety Dominique Hampton were in the middle of the brawl, and as most of the team tried to break it up, tempers continued to run hot. Offensive linemen Julius Buelow and Matteo Mele ran in to try to keep some defensive backs from running in, Buelow got into it with cornerback Thaddeus Dixon, who took a swing at the 6-foot-8 guard.

Notes and observations

The defense came up with more than its fair share of big plays on Wednesday. Safety Makell Esteen picked off Dylan Morris on a pass that glanced off of receiver Giles Jackson's hands and took it back for a touchdown.

Michael Penix also threw an interception, the first that any media member could account for this spring. It looked like the ball almost slipped out of his hands and linebacker Ralen Goforth, who was in perfect coverage on the play, came up with it.

The pass rush also was able to hit home during team periods, as defensive tackle Jayvon Parker and edge rusher Zach Durfee both were able to record a sack on Wednesday.

The play of the day was made by tight end Quentin Moore, who went up and over defensive back Mishael Powell for a 25-yard touchdown. Moore has been running with the first team over the past week in place of Jack Westover, who has been held out with a minor injury.

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
