In this story:

It's St. Patrick's Day, so I thought I would talk a little bit about luck. With a few good bounces and dropped interceptions, there are plenty of ways the Huskies can get over the hump and end up on top.

Led by Heisman candidate quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who finished second in the nation in passing yards with 4,641, Washington is returning one of the most talented offensive groups in the country. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb called his offense, "the most talented group I've ever worked with."

So why does this come down to luck, and not talent? Because it's St. Patrick's Day, and also, the Huskies have already shown that they have the talent. In 2022, the team finished second in total offense, averaging 515.8 yards per game, only behind the Tennessee Volunteers, who averaged 525.5.

The Huskies also finished seventh in points scored, averaging 39.7 points per game, six points off Tennessee's mark of 46.1. If a few bounces fell their way, especially in the California and Oregon State games, where they only put up 28 and 24 points respectively.

A few bounces could also help Washington find their way into the College Football Playoff, as if a Penix pass didn't ricochet off of Jaxson Kirkland's helmet against Arizona State, the Huskies could have found their way in.

All it takes sometimes is a lucky ricochet or a dropped interception to change everything, and maybe a few more of those bounces can go Washington's way in 2023. While nobody should ever rely on luck to get them through a season, sometimes everything just goes right. And if things are going right, maybe the Huskies can chalk some of it up to the luck of the Irish.

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
