Alex Cook showed the Los Angeles Rams that there is more to former University of Washington defensive backs than just the newly acquired Trent McDuffie.

Namely him.

On Saturday night at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Cook intuitively jumped a pass route at his goal line to intercept a ball thrown by New Orleans quarterback Spencer Rattler and return it 100 yards for a touchdown in the Rams' 34-0 exhibition victory.

Every little bit helps for someone such as Cook, who finished up with the Huskies in 2022, played one season in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers and another in the UFL with the Birmingham Stallions, and is making another run at earning a pro roster spot.

The California native pilfered a ball intended for tight end Treyton Welch at the goal line, raced up the sideline, cut inside at the 30 as a teammate tripped up a defender and no one got close to him over the final 70 yards.

"Once I saw [Rattler's] eyes progress to the spot route, I just went and jumped it and I was able to catch it in stride and take it to the house," Cook told reporters in the locker room.

This spring, he had closed out his time in the UFL with a 30-yard interception return for a score against the Houston Gamblers in a 26-13 defeat in his final game.

Cook, 27, signed as a free agent with the Rams in late July and rejoined former Husky teammates in Puka Nacua and McDuffie.

Once he reached the end zone against the Saints, he was mobbed by teammates he barely knows but was grateful to them for making him comfortable as he tries to extend his football career.

“That was so cool,” Cook said. “I mean, that’s a testament of this team and the culture Sean McVay has built. And yeah, since the first day I’ve gotten here, I felt like I was part of the family already, and it’s just been a blessing."

For the Huskies, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Cook played in 53 games and started 21 times.

He came to the UW from Sacrament as a wide receiver and spent two seasons at the position, even starting the 2019 Rose Bowl against Ohio State.

He next made the move to defense for four seasons and finished with a flourish for Kalen DeBoer's first Husky team, being named as a captain and as a second-team All-Pac-12 selection.

In his time in Montlake, Cook had just one interception, coming up with it against Arizona State in 2021 and returning the ball 36 yards.
