Mountaineers Slaughter Spartans

Greensboro, NC - The West Virgina Mountaineers (13-4) opened the three-game series and the first game of a doubleheader versus the UNC Greensboro Spartans (10-8) with a whopping 28-2 victory Saturday afternoon.
West Virginia seniors Dayne Leonard and Caleb McNeeley both produced a four-hit afternoon. McNeely had four RBIs while Leonard had three and added a double to his season total to five.
Four Mountaineers smacked home runs in the game. Braden Barry knocked a leadoff home run to spark a three-run third inning, Grant Hussey smacked a two-run shot in the fifth, Kevin Dowdell ripped a two-run home run in the seventh, and in his fourth collegiate career at-bat, freshman Nick Barone cleared the fence in the eighth for a pair of runs.
West Virginia put up 13 runs in the fourth inning with four Mountaineers collecting two hits in the top of the frame (Tevin Tucker, Barry, McNeely, Leonard) to take a commanding 18-1 lead.
Mountaineers' hurler Ben Hampton picked up his first win of the season after tossing five innings and striking out three in his fifth start of the year. It marked the fourth game this season the junior left the game with the lead, but the offense insured the win with 10 more runs as the Mountaineers coasted to a 28-2 win.
The 28 West Virginia runs were the most in a game during head coach Randy Mazey's tenure and the 28 runs ties for fifth in program history. The Mountaineers reached the mark on April 1 of 2006 against Seton Hall in a 28-8 decision.
The program record for most runs in a game was set against Coppin State in 1998 with 34.
Game two of the doubleheader will begin at approximately 4:00 p.m.
