The Mountaineers Meet UNC Greensboro in Weekend Series

Greensboro, NC – The West Virginia Mountaineers (12-4) will meet the UNC-Greensboro Spartans (10-7) in a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday and the first pitch set for noon.
West Virginia comes into the weekend riding a six-game winning streak, including coming off a dominating two-game midweek series at Appalachian State. The Mountaineers outscored Appy State 36-6 in the two contests.
Sophomore J.J. Wetherholt is making an early campaign for Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, ranking second in the league in batting average (.463), slugging percentage (.851), ranks third in on base percentage (.531), fifth in home runs (5) and has a conference leading nine doubles.
West Virginia left-hander Ben Hampton will make his fifth start of the season but will look for his first win on the year. The junior has left the game with the lead in three games only for the bullpen to relinquish it moments later. However, WVU has won all three games he’s appeared and holds a 3.70 ERA with 21 strikeouts.
Senior Blaine Traxel is scheduled for the second game of the doubleheader. The Cal State Northridge transfer is 3-1 on the season with a 2.32 ERA and is seventh in the Big 12 with 25 strikeouts.
The Spartans’ four-game winning streak was snapped on Tuesday by North Carolina A&T.
UNC Greensboro is led by SoCon Preseason First Team selections Mitchell Smith and Kennedy Jones while Dallas Callahan was named to the second team. Smith leads the team with a .397 batting average and 19 RBI while Rowan Watt has a team-high three home runs.
West Virginia won the only meeting between the two programs in 1991 with a whopping 21-11 victory.
