The Mountaineers Topple No. 13 Terrapins

College Park, MD - The West Virginia Mountaineers (2-2) scored five runs in the first inning and held off to stun the No. 13 Maryland Terrapins (2-2) 8-5 Tuesday evening in Maryland's home-opener.
Maryland starting pitcher Ryan Van Buren walked two Mountaineer batters and gave up a single to load the bases in the top of the first before Caleb McNeely delivered a two RBI double. Then, Logan Suave cleared the bases with a two RBI single back up the middle
Van Buren's afternoon ended after snagging a line drive but an errant throw to first for the double play was low and got by first base.
Sophomore Anderew Johnson took the mound and proceeded to walk the bases loaded, then walked in the Mountaineers fifth run of the inning.
The Mountaineers added a run in the second when McNeely and Ellis Garcia singled, and an error on the hit to left field by Garcia allowed McNeely to advance to third and a fielder's choice over to shortstop from Suave scored McNeely from third.
Sam White lifted a leadoff home run in the third to give West Virginia a 6-0 advantage.
West Virginia freshman right-hander Robby Porco gave up his only two runs of the afternoon following a two RBI double from Nick Larusso, but he was tagged out at third after looking to stretch it to a triple. Porco went five innings and struck out three.
Tevin Tucker delivered a leadoff home run in the seventh to stretch the Mountaineers lead to six, 8-2.
The Terrapins creeped closer in the seventh after Mountaineer reliever Aidan Major gave up a leadoff single and back-to-back home runs from Elijah Lambros and Luke Shliger got the Terps within three, 8-5.
Freshman right-handed reliever David Hagaman came in relieve in the seventh to register three consecutive outs, and got out of a jam in the eighth, after allowing the tying run to come to the plate.
Hagaman retired the first two Maryland batters before Eddie Hacopian doubled down the right field line and Kevin Keister singled into left field to score Hacopian to get the Terps within two.
Hagaman fell behind 3-0 to Zach Martin but battle back to a full count and Martin grounded out to second to end the game as the Mountaineers get the upset with an 8-6 decision.
